Shoichiro Takahashi (born 1959) is a Japanese logician and philosopher of science, and a professor in the Faculty of Letters at Kokugakuin University. He studied mathematics and philosophy at Western Michigan University and completed a master’s degree in philosophy at the University of Michigan. His work includes teaching logical reasoning through debate. His best-known book, “Risei no Genkai,” an introduction to the limits of reason, uses discussions among characters with contrasting viewpoints to examine rational choice, scientific knowledge and logical thought. Organised around Arrow’s impossibility theorem, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and Gödel’s incompleteness theorems, it explores questions involving voting systems, game theory, quantum mechanics and the foundations of mathematics. By explaining the conditions and implications of these different results, Takahashi asks what reasoning can establish, where its conclusions encounter limits and how recognising those limits can sharpen our understanding of knowledge and decision-making.
