Michael Lewis (1960–) is an American nonfiction writer and journalist. He studied art history at Princeton University and earned a master’s degree from the London School of Economics before working as a bond salesman at the investment bank Salomon Brothers. Drawing on that experience, he made his debut with “Liar’s Poker,” an account of the culture and practices of Wall Street. In “Moneyball,” Lewis examined how the Oakland Athletics used statistical analysis to evaluate baseball players and compete against wealthier teams. “The Blind Side” explored the relationship between sport and society through the life of an American football player, while “The Big Short” followed investors who anticipated the financial crisis of 2008. In “Flash Boys,” he investigated the transformation of the stock market through high-frequency trading. He also wrote “The Undoing Project,” which traces the intellectual partnership between psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky. Moving across finance, sports, politics, and science, Lewis explains complex systems through vivid accounts of the individuals who operate within them. His honors include multiple Gerald Loeb Awards and the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award.
