Eiichi Tanizawa (1929–2011) was a Japanese scholar of modern literature and a critic, born in Osaka. While teaching at Kansai University, he founded the literary magazine “Enpitsu” with writers including Takeshi Kaikō and continued to publish reviews and essays. “Kanpon Kamitsubute,” a collection of short book reviews, ranges across literature and history, considering the circumstances behind each book as well as its arguments and value to readers. It won the 1980 Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities. In “Bungō-tachi no Ōgenka: Ōgai, Shōyō, Chogyū,” Tanizawa traces the exchanges of criticism among Mori Ōgai, Tsubouchi Shōyō, and Takayama Chogyū over the direction of Japanese literature. The book won the 2004 Yomiuri Prize for Literature. “Ningen-tsū” turns to everyday relationships, examining jealousy, reputation, and how people behave within organizations through a series of brief essays.
