Yumi Yamaoka is a Japanese translator of history, politics, economics, and nonfiction. She entered translation after working in publishing and has translated books concerning modern Japan, East Asia, and democratic institutions. Her translation of Akiko Hashimoto’s “The Long Defeat” examines the competing memories of defeat in Japan and their relationship to cultural trauma and national identity. In Jan-Werner Müller’s “Democracy Rules,” she translated an inquiry into the institutions and practices that sustain democracy, including political parties, independent media, participation, freedom, and equality. She also translated Kenneth B. Pyle’s “Japan in the American Century,” which traces modern Japanese history through the country’s relationship with the United States. In her translator’s afterword, Yamaoka described the questions the translation raised for her about the historical roots of problems facing contemporary Japan.
