Yuko Yamao (born 1955) is a Japanese novelist from Okayama and a graduate of Doshisha University. Her fantastic fiction creates worlds governed by unfamiliar rules, using imagery that evokes dreams and paintings. Her linked novel “Lapis Lazuli” centres on people destined to sleep throughout the winter. A girl who awakens out of season, dolls brought into a mansion and ghostly figures appear in interconnected narratives, forming a world poised between sleep and wakefulness. Her novel “Tobu Kujaku” (Flying Peacock) won the Izumi Kyoka Prize for Literature in 2018 and the Nihon SF Taisho Award in 2019. Set in a world where fire has become difficult to kindle, it follows young women carrying fire through a garden tea gathering and a man travelling through an underground realm. Through recurring objects, images and encounters, Yamao constructs relationships between places and moments that depart from ordinary understandings of space and time.
