Juichi Yamagiwa (born 1952) is a Japanese primatologist and anthropologist. Born in Tokyo, he graduated from Kyoto University and pursued graduate studies in zoology there. After conducting research at the Japan Monkey Centre and Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute, he became Professor at Kyoto University and later served as the university's 26th President. He is currently Professor Emeritus at Kyoto University and Director-General of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature. Through decades of field research on wild gorillas in Africa, Yamagiwa has explored the evolutionary origins of human family life, sociality, communication, and violence. In "Kyokan Kakumei: Shako suru Jinrui no Shinka to Mirai," he argues that humans developed the capacity for empathy through forms of bodily and musical communication before the emergence of language, and examines how empathy helped create human societies while also contributing to divisions and conflicts between groups in the modern world.
