Michiko Yashiro is a Japanese translator working on natural science, culture, and language. Born in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, she entered translation after working in publishing. Alongside her scientific translations, she has been involved in supporting young people who have experienced violence. She translated David George Haskell’s “Sounds Wild and Broken,” which connects the evolution of sound and hearing with animal communication, human music, and the loss of ecological soundscapes. In Caleb Everett’s “Numbers and the Making of Us,” she translated an account of numbers as cultural inventions acquired through language and learning rather than simply an innate human capacity. Her translation of Haskell’s “The Songs of Trees” examined trees through their relationships with microorganisms, other organisms, and people.
