Machiko Yano is a Japanese translator specializing in nonfiction on medicine, biology, and natural history. In Steven Johnson’s “The Ghost Map,” she translated an investigation of a nineteenth-century London cholera outbreak and the people who traced its source. The narrative connects an inquiry into disease with changes in public health and the understanding of cities. Her work also includes books published in Japanese as “Anata no Karada wa Kyuwari ga Saikin” and “Shokubutsu wa Soko made Shitteiru,” which explore biological processes through accessible questions. In Kirk Wallace Johnson’s account of stolen bird specimens, she translated a story linking a criminal investigation with natural-history collecting and human obsession.
