Atsushi Yamaguchi (born 1953) is a Japanese legal scholar specializing in criminal law. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he served on its faculty for many years before becoming Professor Emeritus of both the University of Tokyo and Waseda University. Widely regarded as one of Japan's leading authorities on criminal law, his scholarship has shaped both academic research and legal education, particularly in the fields of general criminal law and criminal theory. From 2017 to 2023, he served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Japan, bringing together distinguished academic and judicial careers. His best-known work, "Keiho Soron" ("General Principles of Criminal Law"), is a standard textbook that presents a systematic and rigorous analysis of the foundations of criminal law and has become an essential reference for students, scholars, and legal practitioners.
