Hiroki Yamada (born 1953) is a Japanese literary editor from Tokyo. He joined the publisher Shueisha in 1977 and spent more than forty years editing books, the literary magazine “Shōsetsu Subaru,” and paperbacks. His work included Kensō Kitakata’s “Dai Suikoden” series, and he also served as an editor in chief and head of the literary department. In “Bungei Henshūsha, Sakka to Tatakau,” Yamada recounts his exchanges with writers including Kitakata, Yoichi Funado, and Shogo Sato, showing how their manuscripts became books. After retiring, he turned to fiction. His debut novel, “Genjō ga Kita: Saiyū Kokki,” reimagines “Journey to the West”: a boy trying to escape an underground prison meets the formidable monk Xuanzang, receives the name Goku, and joins him on a journey to India. Wherever their party travels, destruction follows.
