Fumi Yamada is a Japanese translator working across social history, business, and literature for younger readers. Christine Rosen’s “The Extinction of Experience” asks what is lost when face-to-face encounters, handwriting, waiting, and other embodied experiences are increasingly mediated by digital technology. In Nick Kapur’s “Japan at the Crossroads,” published in Japanese as “After Anpo 1960,” Yamada introduces research on the political, social, and cultural consequences of the 1960 security-treaty protests. Paul Jarvis’s “Company of One” questions growth as the default goal of a business. Yamada has also translated Michelle Obama’s “The Light We Carry,” which draws on personal experience to consider how people can navigate uncertainty.
