Kaoru Yahano (born 1969) is an English-to-Japanese translator whose work spans science, psychology, business, and history. Born in Chiba Prefecture, she graduated from Keio University’s Faculty of Law and worked for a company before becoming a translator. Exploring the limits of human survival, Frances Ashcroft’s “Life at the Extremes” appeared in her Japanese translation as “Ningen wa Doko made Taerareru no ka.” It examines how the body responds to low oxygen at high altitudes, underwater pressure, heat, and cold, combining physiological research with Ashcroft’s own experiences. Reflecting on lessons learned from a life cut short by terminal illness, Randy Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow’s “The Last Lecture” was translated by Yahano as “Saigo no Jugyo: Boku no Inochi ga Aru Uchi ni.” Through childhood ambitions, relationships with teachers and family, and experiences helping others achieve their dreams, the book considers how to use limited time meaningfully. Investigating problems that undermine the reliability of research, Stuart Ritchie’s “Science Fictions: Exposing Fraud, Bias, Negligence and Hype in Science” appeared in her translation as “Science Fictions: Anata ga Shiranai Kagaku no Shinjitsu.” It examines how misconduct, bias, statistical practices, and pressure to publish can distort findings, while proposing reforms to strengthen science’s ability to identify and correct errors.
