Akiko Tsuchiya is a Japanese translator of nonfiction on biology, evolution and medicine. She graduated in sociology from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Letters. Her translation of The Future Is Wild introduces an imagined future of life shaped by environmental change and evolutionary processes. In Zoobiquity, published in Japanese as Ningen to Dobutsu no Byoki o Issho ni Miru, she conveyed an approach that crosses the boundary between human and veterinary medicine to consider shared diseases and behaviours. She continued translating the same authors in Wildhood, which applies comparative thinking to adolescence. The book examines safety, social status, sex and self-reliance as challenges faced by young animals as well as humans. From possible future ecosystems to present-day illness and development, these translations offer Japanese readers ways of understanding human experience within the wider world of living things.
