Jitsuo Tsuchiyama, born in Fukui Prefecture in 1950, is a Japanese scholar of international politics who taught at Aoyama Gakuin University. His research focuses on security and Japan’s foreign policy. In *Anzen Hosho no Kokusai Seijigaku: Aseri to Ogori*, he uses historical examples to examine the security dilemma—how one country’s efforts to protect itself can alarm others—alongside deterrence, nuclear strategy, and alliances. His two-volume *Nihon ga Riarizumu o Ushinau Toki* asks how Japanese leaders judged their circumstances and where their judgments failed. The first volume traces foreign policy from Japan’s victory in the Sino-Japanese War to its decision to go to war with the United States; the second examines the postwar security treaty with the United States, its revision, and the negotiations over Okinawa’s return to Japan.
