Tomio Tada (1934–2010) was a Japanese immunologist from Ibaraki Prefecture and professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo. After graduating from Chiba University School of Medicine, he presented evidence in 1971 for suppressor T cells, helping establish the concept that immune responses are regulated through a balance between activation and suppression. His honors included the Hideyo Noguchi Memorial Award for Medical Sciences and the Asahi Prize, and he was named a Person of Cultural Merit in 1984. Deeply versed in Noh theater, he also wrote new Noh plays addressing such contemporary subjects as brain death, organ transplantation, and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. His representative work, “Men’eki no Imiron,” which received the Osaragi Jiro Prize, describes immunity not simply as a defense mechanism that rejects foreign matter but as a dynamic system that continually defines and reshapes the self through interactions among cells.
