Yasuko Tashiro is a Japanese translator of English-language historical and social nonfiction, born in 1944. She has translated several works by Tessa Morris-Suzuki that examine the relationship between past events and present-day life. In The Past Within Us, she introduced an investigation of how novels, photographs, films and other media shape historical understanding. Her translation of Exodus to North Korea follows the repatriation programme involving Koreans in Japan, connecting international politics with the experiences of those who moved. In Kitachosen de Kangaeta Koto, Morris-Suzuki retraces a British woman’s early twentieth-century journey through Manchuria and Korea to explore a century of change and the everyday realities of a divided region. Through these translations, Tashiro brings readers historical perspectives attentive to movement, memory and individual lives, extending the discussion beyond accounts organised only around states and governments.
