Tamaki Yuichiro (1969–) is a Japanese politician and former Finance Ministry official. He serves as leader of the Democratic Party for the People and as a member of the House of Representatives from Kagawa’s second district. After graduating from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law, he joined the Ministry of Finance and later studied at Harvard Kennedy School. He left the ministry in 2005 and was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2009. Following his tenure as leader of the Party of Hope, he took part in establishing the present Democratic Party for the People in 2020 and became its leader. Under the slogan “solutions rather than confrontation,” Tamaki has emphasized policies intended to increase disposable income, including raising the income-tax threshold and abolishing the provisional gasoline-tax surcharge. In “‘Tedori o Fuyasu Seiji’ ga Nihon o Kaeru,” he recounts his path into politics and the formation of his party while explaining the economic and political reasoning behind its principal policy proposals.
