Junji Takehara is a Japanese manga artist whose work incorporates the politics, social hierarchy, heraldry, religion, and urban life of medieval Europe. His representative series, "Bretagne Hanayome Ibun," is set in early thirteenth-century Brittany and follows Thomas, a herald ordered to find a prospective bride for his lord, and André, a woman living as a knight while pursuing the person responsible for her father’s death. Their investigation unfolds amid struggles over the Duchy of Brittany, trials by combat, the duties of heralds, and the food and living conditions of medieval society, bringing fictional characters into contact with figures drawn from history.
