Koichi Takahashi (born 1974) is a researcher in AI-driven science, artificial general intelligence (AGI), and computational systems biology. Born in Akita, Japan, he received his doctorate from Keio University in 2004. He began developing the E-Cell System for simulating cellular processes as a student and established a laboratory at RIKEN in 2009. His work expanded from modeling living systems to automating experiments with AI and robotics. In 2022, his research team reported a system that autonomously explored cell-culture conditions for regenerative medicine. This approach extends beyond automating manual procedures to deciding which experiments to perform next. Alongside his research, he helped launch the AI and Society Studies Group and co-founded the AI Alignment Network. His Japanese-language book “AGI: Ningen o Koeru Chino wa Bunmei o Ikani Henyo Saseru ka” examines the possibilities and physical constraints of intelligence, the difficulties of control, and the consequences of scientific automation for human understanding and social institutions. It connects developments in autonomous research with questions about knowledge, human agency, and the organization of society.
