Nanahiko Takagi is a Japanese manga artist who studied history at university and incorporates historical records and regional legends into his work. His representative series, "Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion," is set on Tsushima, the first Japanese battleground of the 1274 Mongol invasion. It follows exiled Kamakura retainer Jinzaburo Kuchii as he joins Princess Teruhi and the island’s inhabitants in resisting the invading Yuan and Goryeo forces. Through battles against an overwhelmingly larger army, the manga depicts Kamakura-era warfare, confusion among the defenders, and the resistance of people whose experiences are only fragmentarily preserved in historical sources. Takagi continued the story in "Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion—The Battle of Hakata," and the original series was adapted into a television anime in 2018.
