Masaru Tachiki is a Japanese translator of English-language nonfiction on economics, politics, and history. James C. Scott’s “Against the Grain” reconsiders conventional accounts of progress by examining relationships among settlement, grain cultivation, and early states. Scott’s “In Praise of Floods” approaches rivers as environments shared by humans and other forms of life rather than simply objects to be controlled. Daniel Waldenström’s work on the history of wealth inequality examines changes in assets, including housing and pensions. Tachiki also translates Branko Milanović’s books, introducing approaches that place inequality, economic ideas, and institutional change within a broad historical frame.
