Kazuma Takezaki (born 1989) is a Japanese scholar of sport sociology and a translator specializing in cultural studies of the body and gender. Born in Hyogo Prefecture, he studied sociology at Ritsumeikan University and pursued graduate research in physical education and sport science at the University of Tsukuba, where he received his doctorate in 2022. After working as a researcher at Seijo University’s Center for Glocal Studies, he joined the School of Information and Communication at Meiji University. His doctoral research examined how people came to shape themselves through postwar Japanese ideals of bodily beauty, focusing on the eight-heads-tall figure and bodybuilding. His subsequent research has addressed magazines, social media, wearable devices, genetic testing, and menstrual tracking apps, examining how bodily measurement and evaluation intersect with technology and gender norms. Co-edited by Takezaki, “Posutohyuman Sutadiizu eno Shotai” grew out of a 2021 symposium series. Its discussions of transgender participation in sport, femtech, and beauty technologies reconsidered bodies inseparable from technology through feminist perspectives. His interest in culture and gender also informed his participation in the Japanese translation of Angela McRobbie’s “Be Creative: Making a Living in the New Culture Industries,” which examined the relationship between aspirations to self-realization and precarious work in cultural industries. In his monograph “Fittonesu no Shakaigaku: Saitekika suru Jiko to Shakai,” he traced the histories of magazine discourse, the protein supplement industry, exercise games, and biohacking to analyze the emergence of a society that encourages people to manage and improve their bodies in pursuit of health and efficiency.
