Hirotaka Takeuchi (born 1946) is a Japanese management scholar whose research concerns organizational knowledge creation, competitive strategy, and the international competitiveness of Japanese companies. He graduated from International Christian University and earned an MBA and PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. After working at McCann-Erickson and McKinsey, he taught at Harvard Business School from 1976 to 1983. He then joined Hitotsubashi University, serving as founding dean of its Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy from 1998 to 2010, before returning to Harvard in 2010. In “The Knowledge-Creating Company: How Japanese Companies Create the Dynamics of Innovation,” co-authored with Ikujiro Nonaka, he examined the interaction between tacit knowledge rooted in experience and explicit knowledge that can be articulated and shared. The SECI model described how socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization enable organizations to develop knowledge and innovate. “Can Japan Compete?,” written with Michael E. Porter and Mariko Sakakibara, challenged the idea of a single Japanese model of success. It compared internationally competitive and less competitive industries, reconsidering government policy and the need for distinctive corporate strategies. In “The Wise Company: How Companies Create Continuous Innovation,” Takeuchi and Nonaka extended their earlier work from creating knowledge to putting it into practice. Through company cases, they examined practical wisdom, judgments about the common good, and leadership that connects accumulated experience with action, asking how organizations can sustain innovation over time.
