Douwe Draaisma (1953–) is a Dutch psychologist and historian of psychology. He studied psychology and philosophy at the University of Groningen and later taught the history of psychology there. In “Why Life Speeds Up as You Get Older: How Memory Shapes Our Past,” he examines autobiographical memory through childhood recollections and changes in the experience of time during aging. “Disturbances of the Mind” recounts the stories of doctors and patients whose names became attached to neurological and psychiatric conditions, revealing how medical discoveries acquire their labels. In “The Man Who Lost His Head: On Illusions and Delusions of the Mind,” Draaisma explores hallucinations, phantom limbs, and delusions to examine the unstable boundary between perception and reality.
