Douglas Richard Hofstadter（ダグラス・リチャード・ホフスタッター、1945年生まれ）は、アメリカの認知科学者、計算機科学者、作家。スタンフォード大学で物理学の博士号（Ph.D.）を取得後、インディアナ大学ブルーミントン校教授として認知科学とコンピューターサイエンスの研究に従事した。人工知能、意識、自己参照、創造性、アナロジーをテーマとする学際的研究で世界的に知られ、数学、論理学、芸術、音楽を融合させた独創的な著作で多くの読者に影響を与えている。1979年刊行の『Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid』は、クルト・ゲーデル、M. C. エッシャー、ヨハン・セバスティアン・バッハの思想と作品を通して知性と意識の本質を探究した画期的な著作として高く評価され、1980年のピューリッツァー賞 一般ノンフィクション部門および全米図書賞を受賞した。著書に『Gödel, Escher, Bach』『Metamagical Themas』『Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies』『I Am a Strange Loop』などがある。

Douglas Richard Hofstadter (born 1945) is an American cognitive scientist, computer scientist, and author. After earning his Ph.D. in Physics from Stanford University, he joined the faculty of Indiana University Bloomington, where he conducted pioneering research in cognitive science and artificial intelligence. Internationally renowned for his interdisciplinary exploration of consciousness, self-reference, analogy, and creativity, Hofstadter brings together mathematics, logic, art, music, and computer science in his writings. His landmark book Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid examines the ideas of Kurt Gödel, M. C. Escher, and Johann Sebastian Bach to explore the nature of intelligence and consciousness. The book won both the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction and the National Book Award. His other notable works include Metamagical Themas, Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies, and I Am a Strange Loop.
