Danny Meyer (born 1958) is an American restaurateur and the founder and executive chairman of Union Square Hospitality Group. He opened Union Square Cafe in New York City in 1985 and went on to establish restaurants including Gramercy Tavern and The Modern. Meyer and his company also developed Shake Shack from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park into an international restaurant chain that became a public company in 2015. His management philosophy of “enlightened hospitality” prioritizes employees, followed by guests, communities, suppliers, and investors, on the principle that a supported workforce is better able to care for customers. His representative book, “Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business,” draws on the successes and failures of his restaurants to distinguish efficient service from hospitality that makes people feel recognized, welcomed, and valued.
