働く人の自律性への関心は、2009年の『モチベーション3.0』(原題 “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us”、邦訳2010年)にもつながった。
Daniel H. Pink (born 1964) is a nonfiction writer who draws on behavioural science and reporting to examine work, motivation, and decision-making. He graduated from Northwestern University and earned a JD from Yale Law School. After working in politics and government, including serving as chief speechwriter to Vice President Al Gore from 1995 to 1997, he became an independent writer and travelled across the United States to report on people working outside conventional employment. “Free Agent Nation” (2001; Japanese translation, 2002) connected the growth of independent work with changing employment contracts, ideas of success, education, taxation, and health insurance. His interest in autonomy at work also informed “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us” (2009; Japanese translation, 2010). Drawing on behavioural research, the book questioned organizational reliance on rewards and punishments and examined autonomy, mastery, and purpose as elements of sustained motivation. Autonomy meant having control over how work was done; mastery involved improvement at meaningful activities; and purpose connected individual effort with a wider contribution. Alongside writing for newspapers and magazines and giving talks, Pink hosted and co-executive produced the National Geographic television series “Crowd Control,” which explored human behaviour. “The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward” (2022; Japanese translation, 2023) extended his investigation of behaviour to an often-dismissed emotion. Based on two large research projects, it identified foundation, boldness, moral, and connection regrets and examined ways to use reflection on past choices in learning and decision-making.
