Dan Schiller is an American scholar and historian of information and communications whose research focuses on telecommunications history, information policy, the digital economy, and the political economy of capitalism. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and holds a Ph.D. in communications from the University of Pennsylvania. Schiller is particularly known for developing the concept of "digital capitalism," examining digital networks not as an autonomous technological revolution but as an infrastructure that reshapes corporations, markets, states, and the global economy. In "Digital Capitalism: Networking the Global Market System," he traces the transformation of computer networks originally developed around government, military, and educational institutions into increasingly commercial systems, showing how digital networks became embedded across production, communications, culture, and consumption and helped reorganize capitalism on a global scale.
