ダン・チャオン（1964年–）は、アメリカの小説家。ネブラスカ州で育ち、家族の断絶や喪失、記憶の不確かさ、自己の正体をめぐる不安を描く。短編集『Among the Missing』（未邦訳）は、2001年の全米図書賞小説部門の最終候補となった。長編『Await Your Reply』（未邦訳）では、他人の身元や新たな人生をめぐる三つの物語を交錯させ、『Ill Will』（未邦訳）では、過去の殺人事件と現在の不審死を通じて、記憶と現実の揺らぎを描いた。短編集『Stay Awake』（未邦訳）はストーリー賞の最終候補に選ばれている。日常の心理描写にサスペンスやホラーの手法を組み合わせ、身近な人や自分自身をどこまで知ることができるのかを問いかける。

Dan Chaon (1964–) is an American novelist and short story writer who grew up in Nebraska. His fiction explores fractured families, loss, unreliable memory, and the instability of identity. His collection “Among the Missing” was a finalist for the 2001 National Book Award for Fiction. In “Await Your Reply,” he interweaves three narratives involving assumed identities and attempts to begin new lives. “Ill Will” connects a past murder case with suspicious deaths in the present, examining the uncertain boundaries between memory and reality. His collection “Stay Awake” was a finalist for the Story Prize. Combining psychological realism with suspense and horror, Chaon asks how fully people can understand those closest to them—or even themselves.
