Ryōtarō Shiba (1923–1996) was a Japanese novelist and nonfiction writer. Born in Osaka, he worked as a journalist for the Sankei Shimbun before embarking on a literary career that transformed historical fiction into one of Japan's most widely read literary genres. Drawing on meticulous historical research and sweeping narrative vision, he vividly portrayed the people and events of pivotal periods in Japanese history, particularly the Sengoku era, the closing years of the Tokugawa shogunate, and the Meiji Restoration.
