George Orwell（ジョージ・オーウェル、1903–1950） イギリスの小説家、ジャーナリスト、評論家。本名はEric Arthur Blair。植民地警察官としてビルマで勤務した経験や、貧困層との生活、スペイン内戦への従軍などを通じて、権力、全体主義、社会的不正義を鋭く見つめた作品を数多く残した。平明で力強い文章と政治的・社会的洞察で20世紀を代表する作家の一人とされ、現代の民主主義や言論の自由を考える上でも大きな影響を与え続けている。代表作『一九八四年』（原題: "Nineteen Eighty-Four"）は、監視社会と言語統制を描いたディストピア文学の金字塔として世界中で読み継がれている。
