Theodore Rosengarten (born 1944) is an American historian and oral historian whose work focuses on people often excluded from conventional accounts of the American South, including Black tenant farmers, formerly enslaved people and their descendants, and Southern Jewish communities. “All God’s Dangers: The Life of Nate Shaw” grew from extensive interviews with Alabama sharecropper Ned Cobb, whose recollections Rosengarten shaped into a first-person autobiography under the name Nate Shaw. The book records farm labor, conflict with landowners, union organizing, imprisonment, and family life under Jim Crow in Cobb’s own voice. It received the 1975 National Book Award, and Rosengarten was named a MacArthur Fellow in 1989.
