Mitsuhiro Sekine is a Japanese translator of English-language nonfiction, books on ideas, and travel writing. He co-translated J. D. Vance’s “Hillbilly Elegy,” a memoir about growing up in a white working-class family in the United States. The book examines family instability, changes in local economies, education, and the experience of moving between social classes. Sekine was also a co-translator of Robert Wright’s “Why Buddhism Is True,” which brings evolutionary psychology into conversation with meditation and Buddhist accounts of perception. It considers how desires and emotions shape the way people experience the world. His translation of Mark Vanhoenacker’s “Imagine a City” follows an airline pilot through cities around the world while returning to memories of his American hometown. The book connected the landscapes encountered through a life of travel with questions of home, memory, and identity.
