Aki Sato (born 1962) is a Japanese novelist from Niigata Prefecture. She made her literary debut in 1991 when "Barutazaru no Henreki" received the Japan Fantasy Novel Award. Drawing extensively on European history and culture, her fiction often places individuals amid war, revolution, and political upheaval. She received the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists for "Tenshi," the Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for New Writers for "Minotaurosu," and the Yomiuri Prize for Literature for "Yorokobe, Sainaru Tamashii yo." Her representative novel, "Minotaurosu," is set in Ukraine in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution and follows Vasili, the son of a landowner whose secluded, bookish life collapses after his father's death. Joining a group that includes wandering German soldiers, he turns to robbery and murder as the surrounding social order disintegrates. The novel traces how an individual adapts to violence as revolution strips away the social status, rules, and moral restraints that had previously structured his life.
