Tamaki Saito (born 1961) is a Japanese psychiatrist and critic. Born in Iwate Prefecture, he completed his doctoral studies at the University of Tsukuba and later served there as a professor; he is now professor emeritus. Specializing in the psychopathology of adolescence and young adulthood, he has worked extensively on hikikomori and promoted Open Dialogue, a therapeutic approach centered on sustained conversation among patients, families, and care providers. In his representative book “Hikikomori: Adolescence without End,” Saito rejects explanations based simply on personality or laziness and describes severe social withdrawal as a condition sustained through the interactions of individuals, families, and society. He also received the Kadokawa Foundation Prize for Arts and Sciences for “Sekai ga Doyobi no Yoru no Yume nara” (If the World Were a Saturday-Night Dream).
