Zach Weinersmith（ザック・ワイナースミス） アメリカの漫画家、サイエンスライター、ノンフィクション作家。人気ウェブコミック「Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal（SMBC）」の作者として広く知られ、科学やテクノロジー、哲学を題材にしたユーモアあふれる作品で多くの読者を獲得している。英文学を学んだ後、漫画制作を中心に活動し、妻で生物学者のケリー・ワイナースミスとの共著による一般向け科学書も高い評価を受けている。代表作『宇宙には、誰も住めない』（原題: "A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through?"）は、人類の宇宙移住をめぐる技術的・生物学的・法的・社会的課題を、最新の科学研究と軽妙なユーモアを交えながら多角的に検証した一冊である。宇宙開発を楽観的な未来像ではなく現実的な視点から捉え直した作品として高く評価され、2024年ロイヤル・ソサエティ・トリヴェディ科学図書賞を受賞した。
Zach Weinersmith is an American cartoonist, science writer, and nonfiction author best known as the creator of the popular webcomic "Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal" (SMBC). Blending humor with science, technology, and philosophy, his comics have attracted a large international audience. He also collaborates with his wife, biologist Kelly Weinersmith, on accessible books about emerging science and technology. His best-known work, "A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through?," examines the scientific, biological, legal, and social challenges of establishing permanent human settlements beyond Earth. Combining rigorous research with wit and skepticism, the book offers a realistic assessment of humanity's future in space and won the 2024 Royal Society Trivedi Science Book Prize.
