Simon Schama is a historian and art historian whose work crosses written scholarship and broadcasting. He taught at institutions including Columbia and wrote and presented historical and art documentaries for the BBC. Landscape and Memory investigated how woods, rivers and rocks acquired meaning through mythology, painting, ritual and political remembrance. Rough Crossings followed enslaved people who sought freedom with the British during the American Revolution, tracing their migration and the trials that followed promises of liberation. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Foreign Bodies examined the history of epidemics and vaccination, placing researchers and physicians within the politics of borders, migration, prejudice and state power. Schama pursued historical interpretation through academic work, books for general readers and television.
