Sarah Perry (born 1979) is a British writer of fiction and non-fiction concerned with faith, science, love and mortality. Raised in Chelmsford, Essex, in a deeply religious household, she grew up with classic literature, Victorian hymns and the King James Bible. She studied English literature at Anglia Polytechnic University, now Anglia Ruskin University, and worked in the Civil Service and other jobs before completing a PhD in Creative Writing at Royal Holloway, University of London, under Andrew Motion. The Essex Serpent (2016) follows an amateur naturalist investigating rumours of a monstrous serpent in Victorian Essex and her relationship with a village clergyman, bringing natural science into contact with faith and superstition. It won Waterstones Book of the Year in 2016 and the British Book Awards for Fiction and Overall Book of the Year in 2017. Enlightenment (2024) traces the friendship and love affairs of two Baptist worshippers separated in age by three decades. Their lives intersect with research into a forgotten woman astronomer and an increasing fascination with the night sky, as religious commitments confront desire. It was longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2024. Death of an Ordinary Man (2025) records the final nine days of her father-in-law David’s life after a cancer diagnosis in 2022, when she and her husband cared for him at home. Drawing on diaries, medical papers and family correspondence, she described the physical process of dying and the practical work of caring for someone approaching death. The book won the Nero Book Awards Non-Fiction Award 2025 and was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction in 2026.
