サラ・ベイクウェル（Sarah Bakewell） イギリスの作家、伝記作家。エセックス大学で哲学を学んだのち、書店員、図書館の初期刊本の目録作成者、学芸員などを経て作家となる。哲学者や作家の思想を、その人物の生涯や交友関係、時代背景と結びつけながら描くノンフィクションを手がけ、モンテーニュを題材にした "How to Live" で全米批評家協会賞を受賞。代表作『実存主義者のカフェにて――自由と存在とアプリコットカクテルを』（原題 "At the Existentialist Café: Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails"）では、1933年のパリのカフェでサルトル、ボーヴォワール、アロンが現象学について語り合う場面から始まり、フッサール、ハイデッガー、カミュ、メルロ＝ポンティらの人生と思想をたどりながら、実存主義が第二次世界大戦や戦後社会のなかで広がっていった過程を描いている。
Sarah Bakewell A British author and biographer who studied philosophy at the University of Essex before working as a bookseller, rare-book cataloguer, and curator. Her nonfiction combines biography with intellectual history, exploring philosophical ideas through the lives, relationships, and historical circumstances of the people who developed them. Her book "How to Live," about Michel de Montaigne, received the National Book Critics Circle Award. In "At the Existentialist Café: Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails," she begins with a 1933 conversation in a Paris café among Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Raymond Aron and follows the lives and ideas of figures including Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Albert Camus, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, tracing the development of existentialism through the upheavals of the Second World War and its influence on postwar culture and politics.
