Sara Nović is an American novelist, essayist, and translator who grew up between the United States and Croatia. She studied fiction and literary translation at Columbia University and, as a Deaf writer, teaches Deaf studies and creative writing. In “Mother Tongue: A Memoir,” Nović traces her childhood hearing loss and her journey from the hearing world into American Sign Language and the Deaf community, connecting that experience to raising hearing children of her own. Through these intertwined stories, she examines language, family, disability, and the pressure to assimilate. The book was longlisted for the 2026 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
