Sandra Scofield (born 1943) is an American novelist from Texas whose fiction often follows families separated by distance and unresolved conflict. Set within an Oregon family, “Beyond Deserving” centers on twin brothers Fish and Michael. Fish returns after a year in jail, while his estranged wife arranges a visit from their young daughter, who has been living with her grandmother in Texas. The novel was a finalist for the 1991 National Book Award. “A Chance to See Egypt” follows Tom Riley, a Chicago pet-store owner grieving his wife’s death, as he returns to the Mexican town where they spent their honeymoon. There he meets Consolata, a widowed café owner, and their growing connection changes the course of his stay.
