Sam Tanenhaus (born 1955) is an American historian, journalist, and biographer best known for his writings on American conservatism and political thought. A former editor of *The New York Times Book Review*, he has written extensively for publications including *The Washington Post*, *The Atlantic*, *The New Yorker*, and *Vanity Fair*. His landmark biography, *Buckley: The Life and the Revolution That Changed America*, draws on nearly three decades of research and unprecedented access to William F. Buckley Jr.'s private papers to chronicle both the man and the rise of the modern conservative movement. Widely hailed as a definitive political biography, the book was longlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award and appeared on numerous Best Books of 2025 lists.
