Sam Quinones is a journalist and nonfiction writer reporting on Mexico and communities in the United States. He spent a decade living in Mexico before working at the Los Angeles Times. Dreamland followed America's opioid crisis through the expansion of prescription painkillers and heroin distribution from Mexico, connecting medicine, commerce and local life. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award. The Least of Us examined the spread of fentanyl and methamphetamine alongside communities responding to addiction and isolation. In The Perfect Tuba (2025), Quinones turned to musicians, teachers and instrument makers, including people seeking to recreate a celebrated 1930s tuba. Alongside his investigations of drug markets, this reporting traced the practical work and shared activities through which people build connections.
