Akira Sasakura (1948–2026) was a Japanese novelist and Buddhist monk from Hyogo Prefecture. A graduate of Waseda University’s literature program, he made his literary debut in 1980 after receiving an honorable mention in the Subaru Literary Prize. He won the Suntory Mystery Grand Prize for “Hyoryu Saiban” in 1988 and the Naoki Prize for “Toi Kuni kara no Satsujinsha” in 1989. The latter novel examines a murder case involving a foreign woman working in Japan, using courtroom testimony to reveal the poverty, exploitation, and isolation behind the crime. In 2016, Sasakura entered the Buddhist monastic life in Chiang Mai, Thailand, taking the name Phra Akira Amaro. His memoir “Shukke e no Michi: Ku no Hate ni Deatta Tai Bukkyo” recounts the personal and professional difficulties that preceded his ordination. Through encounters with monks collecting alms and the people offering them food, he reflects on attachment and the possibility of rebuilding a life through Buddhist practice.
