Masako Sakagawa is a Japanese translator of medical anthropology and nursing ethics. Born in Tokyo in 1934, she completed a master’s degree in English language and literature at the University of Tokyo and taught at Toho Gakuen and Nagano College of Nursing. Her translation of Margaret Lock’s Twice Dead introduces a comparative study of how understandings of death and the body shape organ transplantation in Japan and North America. In Social Suffering, she conveyed discussions that connect illness and violence with political and social structures rather than treating suffering solely as an individual experience. Her translation of Renée C. Fox’s Doctors Without Borders examines humanitarian medicine through both its ideals and the difficult decisions surrounding intervention, risk and the allocation of resources. These translations, alongside her educational career, provide Japanese readers with ways of understanding medical care as a relationship with other people’s lives as well as a system of knowledge and practice.
