佐藤 信（SATO Makoto）- 官僚、国税庁醸造試験所所長、コンサルタント

佐藤信（さとう・まこと、1927–1988）は、日本の農芸化学者、統計学研究者。東京大学農学部卒業後、国税庁醸造試験所に勤務し、酒類の官能評価に統計学を導入した先駆者として知られる。品質管理や実験計画法、推計学の実践的応用に取り組み、「必要に迫られて学び、役立つから使う」という立場から統計学の普及に尽力した。1984年に醸造試験所長を退官後は、東京大学講師や企業コンサルタントとして活躍した。代表作『推計学のすすめ』は、統計学を一般読者向けにわかりやすく解説したロングセラーとして読み継がれている。

Makoto Sato (1927–1988) was a Japanese agricultural chemist and statistician best known for introducing statistical methods into sensory evaluation research in the brewing industry. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he spent many years at the National Research Institute of Brewing, where he pioneered the application of statistical analysis to quality assessment. Committed to the practical use of statistics rather than abstract theory, he helped popularize statistical thinking among scientists, engineers, and business professionals. After retiring as Director of the institute in 1984, he served as a lecturer at the University of Tokyo and as a consultant to private companies. His best-known book, An Introduction to Statistics (Suikeigaku no Susume), remains a classic introduction to statistical reasoning for general readers.
