Rudolf von Jhering (1818–1892) was a German jurist and one of the most influential legal thinkers of the nineteenth century. Trained as a scholar of Roman law, he transformed modern jurisprudence by arguing that law should be understood in terms of its social purpose rather than as a purely logical system. He taught at the universities of Giessen, Göttingen, Vienna, and Göttingen again, where he spent the final years of his career. His best-known work, "Der Kampf ums Recht" ("The Struggle for Law" or "The Struggle for Rights"), argues that the defense of individual rights is both a personal duty and a foundation of the rule of law, making it a classic of legal philosophy that continues to influence legal thought around the world.
