Luke Kennard (born 1981) is a British poet and novelist, and Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Birmingham. He holds a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Exeter, and his research focuses on prose poetry, absurdism, and surrealist techniques in contemporary writing. In 2014, the Poetry Book Society selected him for its once-per-decade “Next Generation Poets” list. His work combines ordinary conversations and awkward social encounters with unexpected, surreal situations, exploring self-consciousness and contemporary anxieties through humor. His response to Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets, “Notes on the Sonnets,” recasts them as prose poems set at a joyless house party, addressing love, marriage, God, and the unease of modern life. The collection won the 2021 Forward Prize for Best Collection. His novel about a penniless, unemployed actor hired to sit inside a large black bag at the back of a university lecture hall as part of a psychological experiment, “Black Bag,” was shortlisted for the 2026 Booker Prize. The actor’s unusual role attracts a researcher’s romantic interest and inspires his friend to seek ways of making money from the situation. Through this absurd premise, Kennard examines artistic ambition, expectations of masculinity, and the desire for intimacy and connection.
