Lucy Apps is a British novelist and doctor who grew up in Newham, East London. She trained in medicine and became a GP, also volunteering with women with learning disabilities. Her work in healthcare and community support accompanied the development of her fiction. She began her debut novel, Gloria Don't Speak, in 2017. Set in Newham, it follows Gloria, a woman with a learning disability who does not speak. At nineteen, she wanders local parks seeking friendship and spends time with Jack, whose anger and unpredictability culminate in violence. Their friendship ends, but news of his release from prison later unsettles her life again. Told from Gloria’s perspective, the novel considers the desire for connection, the aftermath of violence, and the relationship between care and autonomy. The manuscript spent years without finding a publisher. Weatherglass Books requested a substantial revision into chronological order before publishing it in February 2026. Apps was selected as an Observer Best Debut Novelist of 2026, and Gloria Don't Speak was longlisted for that year’s Women’s Prize for Fiction.
