Lou Berney is an American novelist whose crime fiction examines the pasts and family relationships of people caught up in violence. He earned an MFA at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and began his literary career writing short fiction. After publishing a story collection in 1991, he also wrote for film and television. During the 2007–2008 Writers Guild strike, he turned to a new novel, making his full-length crime-fiction debut in 2010 and developing a series about former convict Shake Bouchon. Set in Oklahoma City, “The Long and Faraway Gone” (2015) follows two people still marked by an unsolved movie-theater robbery and a teenage girl’s disappearance in 1986. Their separate investigations explore the persistence of the past a quarter of a century later; the novel won the Edgar Award and other honors in 2016. “November Road” (2018), translated into Japanese as “11-gatsu ni Sarishi Mono,” brings together a man fleeing organized crime and a woman leaving her husband with her two young daughters in the aftermath of John F. Kennedy’s assassination. It combines a criminal pursuit with a family’s escape in a road novel set against a historical event. In “Dark Ride” (2023), published in Japanese as “7-gatsu no Dark Ride,” a young amusement-park employee tries to help children he suspects are being abused, pursuing an investigation that exposes him to serious danger. The story turns on the decision of a previously disengaged man to act on behalf of strangers. It won the Crime Writers’ Association’s Ian Fleming Steel Dagger in 2025.
